Overuse Injuries

Joe Grant, PT, ATC, EdM

Overuse injuries are diagnoses like shin splints, tennis elbow and rotator cuff tendonitis.  They result from increasing the amount of activity too quickly or improper use of the muscles and tendons.

One classification of overuse injuries is as follows:

  • Stage 1: Pain before or after activity, but not during activity.
  • Stage 2: Pain before, during and after activity, but not affecting the quality of the activity.
  • Stage 3: Pain before, during and after activity, affecting the quality of the activity.
  • Stage 4: Pain that limits activity and other aspects of daily living.

Ideally, an individual will moderate or improve their activity during Stage 1 and Stage 2 and will not need medical attention.  If an injury progresses to Stage 3 or Stage 4, the individual should seek medical attention.

If your increase in activity brings on an overuse injury that is not resolving on its own, contact Back To Action Physical Therapy to see if we can help.
