After A Stroke

Joe Grant, PT, ATC, EdM

A stroke is a potentially fatal disorder that occurs after the blood supply to the brain is disturbed.  Long-term effects depend upon how much and which part of the brain are affected.  Physical therapy and speech therapy are often essential after a stroke.  These therapies can be used initially to help educate patients and their families about the stroke and teach prevention of such common complications as limb contractures and bedsores.  More importantly, physical therapy can teach the patient strategies to effectively use the parts of the body most severely affected by the stroke.  Outpatient physical therapy can help teach other areas of the brain to take over functions once performed by the now non-functioning area of the brain.

Recent advances in stroke rehabilitation indicate that those patients who use more of the involved body parts do better.  At Back To Action Physical Therapy, we strive to assist patients recovering from strokes to maximize their function.  Please call us if you would like to schedule an evaluation.
